Sedation dentistry

Intravenous Sedation in dentistry is a useful technique to help anxious patients undergo a stress-free dental procedure. Sedation is a great way to relax you during your appointment, leaving you with little or no recollection of the procedure. We also use the latest techniques in digital dentistry to ensure every stage of the treatment is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Dr Hannah Wilson is vastly experienced at using Intravenous Sedation, successfully treating hundreds of patients with a dental phobia.

What is IV Sedation?

Intravenous Sedation involves the use of Midazolam. Midazolam is an effective anti-anxiety sedative. It induces a deep state of relaxation and a feeling of calm. IV Sedation causes short term amnesia, and so you will have little or no recollection of the dental procedure.

You will remain conscious and be able to respond to questions and requests. This means it is very safe and we can ensure you are comfortable throughout completion of your dental treatment. Time will feel like it passed very quickly and may make you feel as if you were ‘asleep’.

What are the Benefits of IV Sedation?

Dental sedation is an ideal way to help you relax whilst undergoing your dental treatment. It allows you to dissociate yourself from the noise and vibration of the drill or any other procedure. Time will pass very quickly and it will leave you with little or no recollection of the treatment.

Even patients who are not nervous may wish to consider IV sedation whilst undergoing certain lengthy, more invasive procedures.

Here is what one of our many happy sedation patients had to say about their treatment at Infinity Dental Clinic:

“So I’m a very very scared of going to the dentist, I mean crying cold sweats and sick to name all the feeling I get. But the team are amazing…… from the lovely receptionist to the dental nurse’s and my Dr Wilson. She works wonders, she specializes in sedation for treatment and I’ve had this done for my wisdom tooth and extraction. I can truly say was it was the best way forward… they treated me with care love and very understanding… I’m so grateful I found a great practice thank you for looking after me” – Emma Allard

How do I prepare for IV Sedation?

It is important to follow the pre-sedation instructions listed below:

  • No alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment
  • Take all prescribed medication at your usual time (unless specified otherwise)
  • Have a light meal 2 hours before your appointment then no food or drink until afterwards
  • You need to be escorted by an adult who must be present in the building throughout the appointment and who is able to support and look after you when you are discharged home
  • You must go home by car or taxi, not public transport

What will happen during IV Sedation?

A thin plastic cannula is placed in the back of the hand or the arm. Midazolam is then administered, which will quickly make you feel sleepy and relaxed. Throughout the procedure we will monitor your pulse, oxygen levels and  blood pressure. The treatment will then be completed as required and our sedation team will ensure you are comfortable throughout.

Will I feel any pain?

Local anaesthetic will still be used to make sure you can’t feel anything or experience any pain. However, this is administered after you are sedated so you will not be aware of it.

What happens afterwards?

You are likely to feel drowsy, disorientated and forgetful for a few hours as it takes time for the effects of the sedation to wear off.

For 24 hours after your appointment it is important to follow the instructions below:

  • You must not drive any vehicle or ride a bicycle
  • You will be unable to return to work
  • Do not operate any machinery
  • Do not drink alcohol
  • You must not make any important decisions or sign any legal documents

Sedation

Having had a very scary stressful ordeal in the past, I had a severe case of ‘dentist fear’. It wasn’t until I had a big abscess in my mouth that I was forced to go see a dentist. Having not been registered at one for some time due to my fear (10yrs+) my mum recommended her dentist, here. I have to say from start to finish I had the most amazing care and was looked after with such professionalism and they really took me under their wing and made sure I was comfortable with everything from start to finish. Just want to say a massive thank you to Dr Hannah Wilson and all the staff here I’m so happy with the work you have done, and think that we might have lifted some of this fear I had.
