The calming world of Sedation in Dentistry

Posted on 18th August 2018

So many of our patients admit that the reason they have avoided having dental treatment is due to the anxiety caused by the prospect of having treatment.

The anxiety is due to the fear of the unknown. Many patients are going through certain dental treatments for the first time and because they have no positive past experiences to reassure them, the prospect of the treatment can make most people anxious.

In other cases, some of our patients may be facing lengthy dental treatment such as in the case of a full mouth rehabilitation or Dental Implant treatment. This can also be the source of pre-treatment anxiety.

In most of these cases we find that providing treatment under sedation can improve the whole treatment experience for our patients. Dental sedation is an ideal way to help our patients relax whilst undergoing dental treatment. It allows the patient to dissociate themselves from the noise and vibrations of the dental treatment and procedure. Even patients who are not nervous may wish to consider IV sedation whilst undergoing certain lengthy, more invasive procedures.

When patient’s require extensive dental care to restore their smile, we find that although the treatment may take a few months to complete, the major aspects of the treatment can usually be performed in one long appointment. It is usually this longer appointment that benefits from the relaxing techniques provided by Intra-Venous Sedation. The other appointments are usually no more invasive than general dental care and are always performed in a relaxing manner despite being performed without sedation. We have found that all of our patients undergoing this form of dental care have reported an overall relaxing and calming experience throughout their dental treatment.

Dental anxiety has been the source of so many patient’s reluctance to pursue treatment. As with all healthcare, the longer the patient leaves the problem, the bigger the problem becomes. Unfortunately, as the problem gets bigger so does the anxiety and this viscous cycle continues. Dental sedation is the ideal route to providing these patients the pathway back to restoring their dental health, in a relaxing manner.
