Digital Dentistry – Higher accuracy and more comfort

Posted on 7th October 2017

Technological advancements have influenced the work flow in almost all aspects of manufacturing. In Dentistry, the new development of digital intra oral scanners has revolutionised the way in which we design and manufacture our patient’s restorations.

No more gagging

When I ask my patients what is their worst feature of the dental experience, most patients mention the impression taking and how it feels like it will make them gag or choke. This process is crucial in allowing us to duplicate the patient’s mouth and design a restoration in the laboratory.

However, what if there was another way to duplicate the patient’s dental tissues and all the detail in the mouth without having to subject our patients to the gloopy impression material? With the Digital Intra-Oral scanners we are able to record all of the detail inside the mouth without having to take a single impression.

The machine is shaped like a large pen with a specialised camera at the end which captures all of the detail inside the mouth. Not only does it make the process more comfortable for the patient, it also has improved accuracy.

Higher quality impressions = Higher quality restorations

With the more traditional impressions the material is sent to the dental laboratory and the manufacturing process may not actually begin until at least 48 hours have passed. The problem with this time lag is that the material may start to shrink or deform during this time, even a 1% change in dimension will influence the fit of the final restoration.

With the digital scanner, the impression is a digital file which is emailed directly to our dental laboratory. It is not vulnerable to the dimensional instability that conventional materials may be subjected to. The result of this is consistently well fitting restorations for our patients.

Striving for Excellence

We are very proud to be one of a small number of practices in the UK to have invested in the new TRIOS digital scanner for our patients. We believe that it will improve our patient’s dental experience and it will improve the quality of our dentistry further.

The journey to perfection is never ending and we understand that continuous investment in our clinic and on our patients will enable us to maintain our commitment to all of our patients. Our commitment is that we will always strive for excellence and treat our patients with the best materials and techniques that are available today.
