I have had the pleasure of treating many patients over the years. Some of these patients have attended our clinic with advanced dental problems resulting from missing and failing teeth. Such dental problems have significantly affected people’s lives by reducing their confidence and also their ability to speak and chew with ease. In many cases these problems have become so advanced that it has affected our patients lives in many ways. From avoiding meals out with family and friends, to not smiling when taking photographs, these dental problems have had varied effects on lives. This really is the “zero” situation…
When treating these patients with dental implants it is possible to provide our patients with a full set of aesthetic and functional teeth. For many of our patients, this is the first time in decades that they have been able to have a set of teeth with which they can comfortably eat, speak and laugh with.
We completed the treatment for 2 of our patients to replace their upper dentures with fixed teeth supported by dental implants. I saw both patients this week at their 2 week follow-up appointments. One of the patients said this was the first time in over 40 years that she has been able to bite into an apple. This one statement makes you realise how many compromises a patient must make if they do not have stable teeth or are having to rely on a denture. Our patient also reflected on how much more she is smiling and is having to “re-train” her old habits by trying not to cover her smile with her hands – something that she has been doing habitually for the last 40 years.
Having teeth again is the “hero” situation….
