The simple way to an improved smile – Teeth Whitening

Posted on 31st March 2018

Teeth whitening is a simple, non-abrasive and effective way of lightening the colour of your teeth. It is a form of Cosmetic Dentistry which can have a significant effect on the appearance of your smile.

When this treatment is performed using professional techniques, it is a safe solution to improving the colour and appearance of all of your natural teeth.

Bespoke home teeth whitening

Models of your teeth are taken so that our laboratory can construct teeth whitening trays. These trays are designed for home use using a safe form of Dentist prescribed hydrogen peroxide. Our dental team will advise you how to use them. They will need to be worn overnight or for a few hours, usually over a two – three week period.

This is a very simple system to use, putting you in control. You can choose how often and for how long you wish to whiten your teeth. You can then buy top-up whitening gels to whiten your teeth further, or whenever you feel the need to whiten your teeth again.

Internal teeth whitening

This treatment is required when a single tooth has become darkened over time following trauma or root canal treatment. A unique formula of peroxide is carefully placed into the tooth to eliminate the dark staining from within the tooth structure itself. The objective is to lighten the individual tooth so that it is the same colour as the rest of the teeth in your smile.

Side Effects?

Some people may experience sensitivity during treatment. These symptoms are usually temporary and subside soon after finishing treatment. We provide desensitising pastes to help minimise this.

Teeth Whitening Toothpastes

Whitening toothpastes alone will not lighten the natural colour of your teeth. They may however remove some surface staining, as they can be very abrasive.

How to Keep your Teeth White After Treatment

Cut down on the amount of food and drinks which stain your teeth. Items such as tea, coffee, red wine and turmeric should not be consumed too frequently. It is advisable to stop smoking as this is one of the main causes of stained teeth.

Regular sessions with our hygienist are recommended to not only keep your teeth looking cleaner, but also to keep your gums healthier.

If you notice your teeth discolouring again, simply ‘top-up’ using your bespoke whitening trays.

Overall smile appearance

Teeth whitening can be performed as a stand alone treatment or alongside other aesthetic dental treatment to enhance the overall appearance of your smile. Many of our patients choose to have this treatment when considering treatment to have veneers, dental implants or a replacement restoration. This is because traditionally dental restorations have not been designed to naturally match the other teeth and when such treatment is replaced, teeth whitening can help transform the overall smile in a very simple way.
