This week’s blog is about a patient who’s treatment has just been completed. He travelled from Cumbria to pursue treatment to restore his confidence in his smile. As can be seen by the before pictures, he was suffering with periodontal disease and dental decay. Advanced dental disease affects many patients and sometimes the prospect of a nice smile seems so far away.

All of these teeth were failing and the best solution in such a case is to replace the full dentition. This gives us the opportunity to provide a full arch of functional and aesthetic teeth. We also have the opportunity to eliminate the dental disease from the mouth and restore health to the gums and bone once again.

We offered the patient the option to have all of his failing teeth replaced with dental implants and a fixed bridge. In this case we deemed 4 implants in each arch would be sufficient. Usually the decision is between 4 or 6 implants and further explanation of this is detailed in our previous blog. We offered the option to provide this treatment in a day. This meant that he would not have to wear a transitional removable denture. This is a significant benefit to this patient as it meant he can continue with his life without having to take a step back during the treatment. The treatment was provided under sedation to ensure minimum stress to the patient. Using our same day teeth approach we were able to ensure our patient drove back to Cumbria in the afternoon with fixed teeth – and an immediate improvement to his smile!

During the same day treatment we also provided treatment to restore the health of the gums and bone. This ensured the longevity of the treatment provided. As is the case with all dental implant treatment, full healing can take upto 6 months. During this time the patient continued to wear his ‘same day’ fixed teeth. The treatment was completed with the same day teeth being simply replaced with the final prostheses. This is made out of zirconia and is precison milled to fit perfectly within every gum contour, mimicking natural tooth anatomy in every way possible.

Was the journey worth making from Cumbria, I asked the patient. What do you think he said?
