Gum Grafts and Dental Implants

The lower incisor in this image is suffering with gum recession. This is one of the first signs of advanced bone loss affecting a tooth and can ultimately lead to further recession of the gums, further bone loss and even the loss of teeth.

This patient was worried about losing this tooth. The tooth was Mobile and her concern was based on ultimately being without her front tooth. The risk of leaving this failing tooth in is that it would also increase the possibility of a similar issue with her gums appearing on the neighbouring teeth.
In this case we considered either gum grafting over the exisitng tooth VS gum grafting with a replacement tooth instead. Due to the mobility of this tooth, simply gum grafting over this tooth would not have worked and for this reason we considered replacing the tooth would provide the most long term solution for our patient.
Between myself and Dr James David, we carefully planned this treatment case so that the patient would never be without her front tooth. During the whole treatment process she always had a fixed tooth in place and was never seen toothless!
We carefully removed the tooth and built up the missing bone and gum tissue to ensure we could fully restore her gum line. A Straumann dental implant was used to replace this tooth and we also improved the appearance of her overall smile with professional teeth whitening. An old exisotng crown on the upper incisor was also replaced to ensure we prevented any future problems here as well as improving her smile appearance.
The overall outcome has achieved healthy gum contours for pur patient and a smile that she can be confident with.
Working with Dr James David meant our patient would recieve the highest standard of care for each discipline of dentistry she required throughout her treatment plan. Our periodontal team with Claire Jennigs and Melanie Joyce was also involved in the care of this patient. This is often the case at our clinic as we are proud to have a team of dental professionals that provide every type of dentistry within our clinic, all under one roof.
