We have had the pleasure of treating patients at our clinic that have become our friends. When providing advanced dental procedures, a lot of time and emotion is invested by both parties during the whole treatment process. In the previous week I had the pleasure of completing the treatment for a truly inspirational patient.
He presented to our clinic approxiamtely 6 months ago with a failing dentition. Quiet often we find patients have been holding onto failing teeth for much longer than they really should have, simply because the alternative to wear a looser removable denture is not one that presents an improved solution for them. This patient was in a very similar situation. He was already wearing a partial denture to replace some of the missing teeth he had in his upper arch however, his remaining teeth were loose and failing therefore, he needed to consider a more permanent solution to his upper arch.
We opted to remove the remaining failing teeth and replace them with dental implants to support a fixed set of zirconia teeth in his upper arch. The treatment involved rebuilding his bone structure and improving the health of his gums to maximise the long term outcomes for his treatment plan. During the treatment we provided the patient with temporary teeth. In advanced cases such as this, the treatment process can take approximately 6 months before the final teeth are fitted. During this time we got to know the patient extremely well. This was a man who was in his 60’s and looked physically very fit and healthy. We learned that he had won numerous competitions in the field of body building and he has a PHD in science. We also learned that he has written some groundbreaking books in the field of bodybuilding using scientific knowledge to provide data based guidance in this very popular area of health training. His committment to good health and dedication to train was remarkable to see and I was certainly inspired by his high levels of dedication.
We completed his treatment last week and the effect this has had on the patient’s ability to eat, speak and smile is huge! Regardless of how many times I have done this it still feels as monumental as it did the first time I did it. As you can see from the pictures, it really is a huge transformation and one that the patient is very pleased with. The patient genorously gifted the clinic signed copies of his books when his treatment was completed last week and that gesture really meant a lot to everyone, no one expects gifts from patients and this was certainly a pleasant surprise to us all!
I truly love helping patients achieve their desired dental health and smile as it is our way of helping patients improve their lives. What our patients may not realise is that they too have a positive effect on all of us so thank you!
