Saving Smiles Without Erasing Character

Not every smile needs a full makeover. Sometimes the goal is simple. Help someone look like themselves, just regain their confidence. We see this often in practice, and a recent case shows it perfectly.

A lovely young patient came in, in a panic, after her upper left front tooth had snapped while she was eating. The break was below the gum line as the tooth was already weakened from previous extensive treatment. It was discoloured, loose, uncomfortable, and her existing dentist could not offer a fixed replacement option. This patient was keen to avoid wearing a denture and so came to seek an improved solution. To make things more stressful, her mum’s wedding abroad was only a month away. Quite rightly, she did not want to stand in wedding photos with a gap in the centre of her smile.

At her assessment we noted that her upper right front tooth naturally sits a little forward. She liked it that way. It was her smile, her character. So instead of redesigning everything, we focused on the failing tooth. The plan was simple and predictable. Remove the broken upper left central incisor, place an implant, and carry out whitening to brighten the overall result.

The treatment went smoothly, but just before fitting the final implant crown we had another twist. She phoned in a panic the morning before her holiday. Her temporary tooth had broken. Timing could not have been worse. However, not to panic, we always like to try and find a solution and so we worked with the lab straight away and repaired it in time for her trip that afternoon.

The final result looks great. Her smile is still entirely hers, only healthier, whiter, and more refined. Confidence restored, wedding saved, holiday saved. This is the heart of implant dentistry. Not chasing perfection, just giving people their smiles back when they need it most.
