From The Blog:

The First Thing She Wanted to Do Was Bite Into an Apple

This was genuinely one of the best smiles we have ever created.

When we revealed her new smile this week, our patient burst into tears. Her husband was so happy for her, and seeing their reaction was one of those moments that reminds me exactly why we do what we do.

But then she said something I’ll never forget.

“The first thing I’m going to do is go to Marks & Spencer, buy an apple and bite into it.”

An apple.

Such a simple thing. But when you haven’t been able to confidently bite and chew for years, it means everything.

When she first came to us, she was in pain. Her remaining upper teeth were loose, wobbly and crumbling, and these teeth were supporting her partial denture. The denture was becoming unstable and she was constantly worried it might come away.

She had to be careful about what she ate and couldn’t chew properly on one side.

But it was affecting far more than eating.

She had started socialising less because she was frightened a tooth might move or come out when she laughed.

And she was extremely nervous about dental treatment.

Previous experiences had left her so anxious that she had made dental appointments in the past but simply couldn’t go through with them. She had even tried hypnotherapy to overcome her fear.

At her first appointment with us, she hesitated at the door.

She apologised for the condition of her teeth.

She had absolutely nothing to apologise for.

She had been frightened for a long time, and walking through our door took real courage.

We spent time discussing her options and, most importantly, making sure she felt safe and in control.

Dr Hannah Wilson provided sedation to help her comfortably manage the treatment, and I carried out her implant treatment.

For someone who had been so frightened of dentistry, the trust she placed in us was enormous. I’m incredibly grateful for it.

Then came the day we had all been waiting for.

Her new smile.

There were tears. There was a very happy husband. And there was a patient who could finally smile, laugh and eat without constantly worrying about her teeth.

Dental implants can replace teeth, but sometimes what we are really giving someone back is much more important.

Confidence. Freedom. And the ability to enjoy the simple things in life again.

I hope that apple tasted absolutely incredible.
