Tooth wear due to missing teeth

Posted on 6th June 2021

The molars at the back form the foundations of everything in the mouth. Without molar teeth, many patients suffer from dental instability and a lack of function. This can have damaging effects on the incisors at the front. Over using the incisors can result in fractures and the wearing away of these naturally thinner teeth. This is one of the main casues of tooth wear and leads to the gradual deterioration of teeth.

LIFE CHANGING TREATMENT – DENTAL IMPLANTS

The patient below attended our clinic with the same problems I have described above.

This patient is a 55 year old man who has had most of his upper and lower teeth missing at the back of his mouth. His front teeth are still intact however, he attended my clinic because he continues to experience tooth fractures and severe tooth wear to his front teeth. Following his consultation at our clinic, we deduced that the main reason for his teeth wearing away was due to the lack of teeth he had at the back of his mouth. This had resulted in higher than usual stresses being passed onto the front teeth resulting in fractures of these teeth. We recommended restoring his posterior occlusion stability so that the front teeth could be effectively repaired with successful long term outcomes.

By replacing the teeth at the back of his mouth with dental implants, this patient can also expect to chew and talk much more effectively.

Our multi-skilled dental team was able to replace the missing teeth using dental implants and provide aesthetic composite restorations of the front teeth to complete a stable, functional and aesthetic smile. The composite restorations are able to reverse the effects of tooth wear by restoring the teeth back to their normal size, shape and anatomy.

Following treatment this patient attended our clinic and simply confessed that his wife loves his new smile! Not only has his smile appearance significantly improved but so has the functional ability. The patient can now eat all the foods he enjoys and his teeth are protected from further weara in the future!

This is the true aim of this treatment, to provide our patients with long lasting smiles!
