Our story of collaboration involves the treatment journey of one of our lovely patients that spanned several months. This is the tale of two dentists, Dr. Patel and myself, Dr. McNeil, and our shared effort to bring back the smile of a patient who had lost faith in dentistry.
The Initial Consultation
At Infinity Dental Clinic, we believe in the power of teamwork to transform smiles and restore confidence. In April 2023, our patient first visited Dr. Mohsin Patel for an implant consultation. She had been struggling with an upper partial denture she disliked and had lost all faith in dentists due to past experiences. Despite her reservations, she decided to place her trust in our team, hoping to replace her denture with implants.
A comprehensive examination and a CBCT scan (3D X-ray) revealed advanced bone loss in the patient’s upper jaw. This bone loss posed a significant challenge, as implants require a certain amount of bone for successful placement. Without sufficient bone, a large graft would be necessary, followed by a six-month healing period before we could consider the placement of dental implants.
Dr. Patel met with the patient at the next appointment to fully discuss the case with her, and explain that despite the lack of bone, we could provide the patient with a smile she would be proud to share. All of our cases are planned utilising the knowledge of all our team members, and as such, we also showed the patient the cosmetic improvements we could make to her remaining teeth. Committed to the journey, the patient agreed to start the comprehensive treatment plan.
Enhancing Bone Volume and Straightening Teeth
The bone graft procedure was completed in a single appointment with minimal recovery. Ten days later, the stitches were removed, and I met the patient for the next phase of her treatment. During this appointment, we discussed the aesthetic options available, including Invisalign to correct her overbite, teeth whitening, and replacing an old crown that would stand out after whitening.
Using the CBCT scan and a thorough examination, I planned the Invisalign treatment with special 3D software, allowing the patient to visualize the expected results. Excited by the potential transformation, our patient was eager to begin. The timing was perfect, as the Invisalign treatment would conclude around the same time the implants would fully heal, so we managed to make the most of the time we had available, without delaying the fitting of her new teeth.
The Final Stages of Treatment
Throughout the treatment, the patient attended appointments every 6-8 weeks to monitor the progress of her Invisalign aligners. The aligners were designed to accommodate false teeth, disguising the gaps left by her missing teeth. This not only improved her appearance but also boosted her confidence during the treatment period.
After the bone had healed, Dr. Patel performed the surgical placement of the implants. Once the Invisalign treatment was complete and the teeth were in their final positions, we proceeded with whitening to achieve a bright, natural-looking smile.
A digital scan of the patient’s mouth was taken to design the implant crowns and the new crown for the upper arch. Working closely with Dentogenics Laboratory in Harrogate, we ensured the final products met our high standards. About three weeks later, we fitted the implants and new crown, making minor adjustments with composite re-contouring to achieve the perfect final smile.
