Why Strength Matters in Full Arch Implant Dentistry

For many people, dental problems develop slowly over time. Patients gradually adapt, avoid certain foods, stop smiling properly, and often just learn to live with discomfort for far longer than they should.

Recently, I treated a patient who came to see me with a failing upper set of teeth affected by advanced chronic periodontal disease. Her teeth were extremely loose and mobile, she was struggling to chew properly, and eating had become increasingly difficult. Certain foods had to be avoided altogether because function was so poor. She also experienced regular toothache, but like many patients in this situation, had simply learned to tolerate it.

Unsurprisingly, her confidence had also been badly affected. Smiling comfortably was something she no longer felt able to do.

Following a detailed consultation, assessment and careful CBCT scan, we discussed the available treatment options and decided the best long-term solution would be a full upper implant-supported bridge.

Treatment involved placing four titanium dental implants into the upper jaw along with bone grafting to help strengthen and support the surrounding bone. Once the implants had integrated successfully, the next stage was to carefully design and manufacture the final bridge.

This particular case required additional strength because the patient had a tendency to clench and grind her teeth. For that reason, within the highly aesthetic zirconia bridge, we incorporated a custom milled titanium bar linking all four implants together.

This approach allowed us to provide a restoration that is not only natural-looking and highly functional, but also exceptionally strong and durable. The titanium framework provides additional reinforcement beneath the zirconia teeth, significantly reducing the risk of catastrophic fracture and helping to ensure long-term predictability for the patient.

One of the major advantages of having a state-of-the-art in-house laboratory is that we are able to manufacture truly customised restorations which combine the best of both worlds: the excellent aesthetics of zirconia reinforced with the strength and durability of titanium. This allows us to provide patients with restorations that are not only highly aesthetic and natural-looking, but also exceptionally strong and predictable long term.

The final result was a full set of stable, strong, natural-looking teeth which restored both function and confidence. Most importantly, she can now eat comfortably again, smile without embarrassment, and move forward without the constant discomfort she had simply accepted for years.

Cases like this are always incredibly rewarding for our team because the impact goes far beyond teeth alone.
