One thing has really stood out to me this week across both our Harrogate and Leeds practices.
I’ve welcomed so many new patients who have said almost exactly the same thing: “What you said about people putting treatment off because of worries or fears… that could have been me.”
It’s something I hear every day. Patients tell me they’ve spent years convincing themselves they couldn’t have the treatment they needed. Whether it’s dental implants, extractions, Invisalign, or a combination of treatments, anxiety had become the biggest obstacle, not the dentistry itself.

Many of these patients finally took that first step after seeing our patient stories and smile transformations on our website and blogs. They realised that if someone else could do it, maybe they could too. The photographs alongside this article show one such patient. For years, they believed they simply wouldn’t be able to go through with treatment because of their fears. With the help of IV sedation, they overcame that anxiety and today have the healthy, functional smile they had dreamed of for so long. It’s a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when fear no longer stands in the way.
The flip side of all those first consultations is that this week I’ve also been completing treatment for many patients who have already made the first step to overcome their fears. This week alone I’ve carried out sedation appointments for a huge range of treatments, from life-changing Same Day Teeth with full mouth immediate implants, to extractions, and even periodontal treatment for patients who simply couldn’t tolerate having their teeth cleaned. Whatever treatment is needed, our aim is always to find a way to make it possible.

IV sedation works by relieving anxiety and allowing you to feel deeply relaxed, almost as though you’re in your own little world. It also has amnesic properties, meaning most patients remember very little, if anything, about their appointment afterwards. For those needing more complex procedures such as dental implants, it can make the entire experience far less daunting and often gives patients the confidence to continue with future treatment.
One of the greatest rewards of my job isn’t placing implants or completing complex treatment. It’s seeing patients overcome fears they’ve carried for years. Over the past week, I feel incredibly lucky to receive hugs and thanks from patients who were simply so proud of themselves for finally taking that step. Seeing the sense of achievement on their faces reminded me of the real power we have as dental professionals. It’s not just about improving smiles or restoring teeth, it’s about giving people back their confidence, helping them overcome years of fear, and changing the way they feel about visiting the dentist.
If you’ve been putting treatment off because of fear, please know you’re not alone, and there are ways we can help.
