Dental Sedation Explained
For many patients, the hardest part of dental treatment is not the treatment itself. It is the fear, anxiety, or worry that comes before it.
At Infinity Dental Clinic, our dental sedation service is designed to help nervous patients feel calm, relaxed, and reassured throughout their appointment. Whether you have avoided the dentist for many years, feel anxious about complex treatment, or simply want a calmer experience, dental sedation can make dentistry feel far more manageable.
With a gentle and caring approach, our team helps you feel completely at ease, so you can receive the treatment you need with confidence and comfort.
Watch: Dental Sedation Explained…
In this short video, Dr Hannah Wilson explains how dental sedation works, who it can help, and why it can be life changing for patients who feel anxious about dental treatment.
What is Dental Sedation?
At Infinity Dental Clinic, we provide intravenous sedation, often known as IV sedation. This involves the use of Midazolam, an anti anxiety sedative that helps you enter a calm, dream like state while your dental treatment is carried out.
You remain conscious and able to respond throughout your appointment, but many patients feel as though they have been asleep. Time often seems to pass very quickly, and because IV sedation can cause short term memory loss, you may have little or no recollection of the procedure afterwards.
For patients with dental phobia, anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or concerns about longer appointments, sedation can make treatment feel far less overwhelming.
How Dental Sedation Works
On the day of treatment, a small cannula is placed in your hand or arm. The sedative medication is then carefully administered, helping you feel calm, relaxed, and sleepy. Throughout your appointment, your pulse, oxygen levels, and blood pressure are closely monitored by our trained team.
Local anaesthetic is still used to ensure the treatment itself is comfortable. This is usually given once you are already sedated, meaning many patients are unaware of this part of the process.
Once your dental treatment is complete, you will spend time recovering at the clinic before being taken home by your accompanying adult.
The Benefits of Dental Sedation
- Feel calm and relaxed during treatment
- Ideal for nervous or anxious patients
- Helps patients with dental phobia
- Useful for longer or more complex appointments
- Can help with strong gag reflexes
- Little or no memory of the procedure afterwards
- Allows you to receive the care you may have been avoiding
- A safer, more comfortable experience under close monitoring
Who Is Dental Sedation For?
Dental sedation can be suitable for patients who:
- Feel nervous or anxious about dental treatment
- Have avoided the dentist for many years
- Have had a difficult dental experience in the past
- Need longer or more complex treatment
- Struggle with a strong gag reflex
- Feel worried about sounds, sensations, or injections
- Want to feel calmer and more in control during treatment
Every patient is different, which is why a full sedation assessment is carried out before treatment. This allows us to understand your needs properly and make sure the approach is safe, suitable, and carefully planned around you.
Is Dental Sedation Safe?
At Infinity Dental Clinic, your safety is carefully monitored before, during, and after treatment. Your breathing, pulse, oxygen levels, and blood pressure are checked throughout your appointment, allowing our team to make sure you remain comfortable and safe at every stage.
You will remain conscious and able to respond to questions or instructions, but you should feel deeply relaxed and detached from the treatment experience.
What Should I Expect Before Dental Sedation?
During this appointment, we will:
- Review your medical history
- Discuss any medication you take
- Explain how IV sedation works
- Answer any questions you may have
- Check that sedation is suitable for you
- Talk you through what happens before, during, and after treatment
This appointment is an important part of helping you feel informed, reassured, and confident before your treatment day.
How Do I Prepare For Dental Sedation?
Before IV sedation, you will be given clear instructions by our team. These may include:
- Avoiding alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment
- Continuing prescribed medication unless advised otherwise
- Having a light meal around two hours before treatment
- Avoiding food and drink after this unless instructed otherwise
- Arranging for a responsible adult to accompany you
- Travelling home by car or taxi after your appointment
You will not be able to drive, cycle, use public transport alone, or return to work immediately after sedation.
