For a majority of our patients, the main cause of their tooth loss is chronic periodontal disease. This disease causes the gradual deterioration of the bone supporting the teeth, eventually making them weaker and unstable. When implants are placed to replace these missing teeth, we should take into consideration how to improve the structure of the bone since periodontal disease is usually responsible for the bone loss. By reconstructing the bone, the implants will increase their rate of success in the long–term and treatment outcomes are improved.
Poor plaque control and smoking are major contributors to periodontal disease which can cause loss of bone and gums around teeth. It can also affect the bone around the implants; thus, we equip patients with the tools and techniques to comprehensively maintain oral hygiene at home. Studies have shown that regular visits to the hygienist and consistent daily hygiene practices help to control the disease and protect other teeth in the mouth.

Bone graft and a dental implant to replace the missing tooth and bone structure
Our patients have seen positive improvements in the health of their teeth and gums from the periodontal care they continue to implement. The combination of work from both the dental team and the patient yields beautiful results, as shown in the radiographic images below. The darkened spaces around the teeth indicate the amount of bone loss in those areas. These patients were allocated a solution that combined the restoration of missing bone volume and implant placement to fix the unstable teeth. Maintaining their future periodontal health will likely ensure the success of their implants and the overall health of their teeth.
