Understanding Gum Disease
Prevent, treat, and protect with expert dental hygiene care.
Many people are unaware they have gum disease, despite it being one of the most common health conditions worldwide. It’s both preventable and treatable when identified early. Periodontal disease occurs when bacteria and plaque build up around the gum line. Without proper cleaning, the gums begin to separate from the teeth, forming ‘pockets’ where bacteria cause further damage. Over time, this can lead to gum recession, loose teeth, infection, or even tooth loss.
Scale and polish
Where necessary, a scale and polish may be carried out by your dental hygienist to remove calculus (tartar) that has built up on the teeth. Regular removal is essential, as calculus can lead to gum disease, bone loss, and even tooth loss. Since it cannot be removed by brushing alone, attending routine hygiene appointments helps protect your oral health. At Infinity Dental Clinic, your trusted Dental Hygiene Clinic in Leeds, we can also perform airflow polishing to remove even the most stubborn surface stains and leave your teeth feeling exceptionally clean.
Professional periodontal cleaning
If you suffer from heavily stained teeth or gum disease, your Dentist may recommend a session with our Hygienist for a professional periodontal clean. Regular scaling of hard-to-reach areas helps slow the progression of gum disease, while thorough polishing removes stains and leaves your teeth feeling fresh and clean. The goal of regular dental hygiene therapy is to maintain healthy gums and teeth — our highly trained Dental Hygienists are an essential part of your ongoing care and overall oral health..
WHAT TO EXPECT
Do you have Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal gum disease is often pain-free — sometimes called “the silent disease” — which means you may not realise you have it until your Dentist or Hygienist checks for signs during your visit.
Common warning signs to look out for include:
-
Bleeding gums when brushing or eating
-
Red or swollen gums
-
Persistent bad breath
-
Spaces developing between teeth
-
Loose or shifting teeth
-
Receding gums
-
Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks
If you notice any of these symptoms, our team at Infinity Dental Clinic, your trusted Dental Hygiene Clinic in Leeds, can assess your gum health and provide expert care to help restore and protect your smile.

SMALL CHANGES MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE
Oral Hygiene Advice
At Infinity Dental Clinic, we understand prevention of gum disease and tooth decay are of vital importance. We will provide appropriate oral hygiene and diet advice to help maintain healthy and beautiful teeth.
Oral Hygiene
Brush twice a day for two minutes (morning and before bed) using fluoride toothpaste.
Children up to age seven should be assisted with brushing to ensure proper technique.
Manual toothbrush: Angle the bristles at 45° towards the gum line and gently sweep back and forth to remove plaque — remembering to clean both the inside, outside, and biting surfaces of each tooth.
Electric toothbrush: Angle the bristles towards the gum and let the brush do the work — slowly move from tooth to tooth without scrubbing. Make sure to clean all surfaces carefully.
Floss or use TePe brushes daily. For personalised advice, speak with one of our Hygienists, including Melanie Joyce, who can demonstrate the best technique for you.
Diet
Maintain a balanced diet, limiting sugary and acidic snacks between meals.
Avoid anything sugary or acidic for one hour before bed and during the night — stick to water to help protect your teeth and gums.
