Extractions and Wisdom Teeth

Oral surgery and wisdom tooth extraction

At Infinity Dental Clinic we will do all we can to save your natural teeth. Occasionally there may be unavoidable reasons why this is not possible and an extraction may be required. However, you can be assured we will do all we can to make the process as comfortable as possible.

We are proud to be using the revolutionary, state-of-the-art digital intra-oral scanners and CBCT imaging to ensure we are leading the way in Digital Dentistry. We are one of only a few Dental Practices in the UK to provide all of these facilities in-house. This means we can ensure our standards are maintained at the highest level of dental care provision.

Leading the way for safe dentistry

Within Dentistry, there have always been certain surgical procedures, such as the extraction of impacted wisdom teeth, that carry a small risk of post operative complications. Patients will have been made aware of these risks should they present. However, with more recent advances in technology and the use of 3-dimensional CBCT scanning, we can minimise these risks even further. In fact, some of these risks can be totally eliminated by utilising this technology in the planning and treatment stages. It is a great tribute to modern dentistry that we are striving for safety and success rates that are edging ever closer to the 100% mark. This is largely due to the utilisation of digital technology within dentistry.

We are proud to be using these latest protocols at our clinic.

Why would you need a tooth extraction?

If a tooth is heavily decayed and beyond restoration the tooth may require extraction. Other reasons include acute or chronic infections, fractures, gum disease, orthodontic reasons or impacted wisdom teeth.

Extracting teeth will always be a last resort, but do not worry, we will discuss the options for replacing your missing teeth.

What to expect from a tooth extraction?

Initially, an x-ray or CBCT scan of the tooth will be taken. Your Dentist will ensure the tooth area is fully numb in order to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. You can expect to feel some pressure – but not pain! After the extraction, the Dentist will advise you of the post-operative instructions and check all is well before you leave.

Post-operative instructions

In order to promote healing, the following instructions should be followed carefully:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for 3-4 hours, until the local anaesthetic has worn off. This will stop you getting any food in the socket or biting your lip whilst numb.
  • Do not rinse your mouth out for the next 24 hours.
  • After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salty water 3-4 times a day for the next few days.
  • Do not smoke for at least 48 hours after your extraction, as smoking delays healing and increases the chance of infection. This can be very painful.
  • You may want to take painkillers for 24 hours to minimise discomfort.
  • Avoid alcohol and vigorous exercise for 24 hours.

Treating wisdom tooth pain

The most common cause of wisdom tooth pain is pericoronitis. Pericoronitis is the inflammation of the gum around a partially erupted wisdom tooth. Approximately 30% of wisdom teeth do not fully erupt. This is usually not a problem. However, in some cases it can cause painful pericoronitis.

Pericoronitis can usually be treated by professional irrigation and antibiotic therapy, but in severe cases an extraction may be required. Wisdom teeth usually require a ‘surgical’ extraction. At Infinity Dental Clinic, Dr Vinay Mistry is our lead surgeon in carrying out these oral surgery procedures.

General Dental Care

I have been delighted with the quality of dental care provided by Hannah Wilson. She is first-class at her job, and inspires trust and confidence in her patients. I particularly like the way that she explains procedures, offers reassurance and readily answers any questions which her patients may have.

General Dental Care

I have recently had composite fillings and am just starting teeth whitening. I cannot recommend this place enough, it is the best dental clinic I have ever seen. I thank Dr. James, he is really good and put my mind at ease about the works required. Explained the best course of action, and a schedule for works. I am amazed as i cannot even see where the composite fillings are. This staff at the clinic provide an excellent service, very polite, friendly and professional. I am very satisfied with all the work they did on my teeth. Thanks you to Dr. James and the team of infinity dental clinic.

Dental Implants

I had a 5-month treatment with Infinity Dental, needing 5 implants. The operation did take around 4 hours to complete, but I was so very impressed with how hardworking and dedicated the team were, and how spotless the facilities were. Dr M. Patel was amazing, always professional and kept me reassured throughout the entire process, hands down one of the best dentists I’ve encountered. I highly recommend Infinity and am ever so grateful for the lovely smile that I now have thanks to them!
